About the Summer Blood Challenge
Between May 19 and August 30, 128 businesses and organizations Delmarva-wide battled it out in the 6th annual Summer Blood Challenge, a competition to recruit the most new Blood Bank members and blood donors. Christiana Care Health System was named the “Top Lifesaving Employer” on Delmarva for the fifth consecutive year.
With the theme “Fuel for Life, Hero for Life,” this year’s Challenge was designed to raise awareness of the importance of blood donations, especially during the critical summer months when fewer people typically give blood. Every day on Delmarva, 370 blood donors are needed to keep the blood supply strong.
Overall, the SBC set new records in every category. Participants contributed a total of 5,896 blood donations (11% increase over the 2007 Challenge) and 2,360 new Blood Bank members (19% increase).
